GRACE AND PEACE …

When you read this, dear Readers, it will be very close to Christmas. Already as I write, we are into Advent: Christmas lights are appearing on the streets and in the windows of homes and offices. There is a busy, crowded, and cheerful feeling. Both Christmas, and the time of Advent leading up to it, are times of joy.

For the International Congregation, Christmas is in some ways an odd time: many of our members, both regulars and short-term, travel away to spend Christmas with their families in other parts of the world. Yet at our Mass on Christmas Day, 25.12., we sometimes have a bigger congregation than usual, with international visitors to Turku who find their way to the Cathedral at 4 pm to celebrate the birth of our Lord and to join together in singing Christmas music both old and familiar, and unfamiliar and new.

Music is an important part of the way we celebrate Christmas, bringing together many tunes which have become international with others that are specifically national. This mixture of national and international is a central feature of our Congregation, which brings together Finns with people from different Christian traditions in other countries – Lutheran and Anglican and many others: a ’microcosm’ of the worldwide Church.

We had a marvelous experience of this in early November, when the Anglican Nordic & Baltic regional Synod (council) met at Kristillinen opisto, and on Sunday 1.11. celebrated All Saints’ Day together with Maarian srk in the beautiful Maariankirkko. We had music in many different idioms: resounding hymns sung jointly in Finnish and English, medieval plainsong, lovely motets and spirituals from the Adastra choir, and, not least, the Sudanese girls who led the procession with their chanting and dancing. Warm thanks to St Mary’s Parish for hosting this joyful ecumenical event!

This Christmas season, we will have two Carols services: on Friday 18.12., not in church this time but in the ’Vatican’, the Parish Union House, Eerikinkatu 3, at 6 pm; and on 6.1., Epiphany, at 4 pm in the Cathedral Chapel. These follow a pattern made famous by King’s College Cambridge: a series of Bible readings from Genesis to the Gospels, telling the salvation story, alternating with songs for the congregation and choir.

You are all, dear Readers, very welcome to join us if you wish, to celebrate in English the theological message of this joyful season, the birth of our Lord and Saviour, in readings and in song.

The darkness is come

Novembermonth when you go to work in darkness and by the time you clock out it’s dark again. If you’re not sad, you’ve got SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as the Winter blues). On a rainy day, the nights are almost brighter than the days, since at least then the stalwart streetlights and lights on buildings make their stand against the encroaching darkness. The Finnish name for November, which I like to interpret into Deathmoon, hits the mark.

“Everything dies”, Type O Negative sing in their song with the same name. Certainly, this time of year proves that point. Especially if you are new to this country the darkness and the dreary weather will affect you – this is just a scientific fact.

So, enter the church and the congregation. To offset the death, darkness and dreariness of November to Lutheran church year offers us… Judgement Day! Ugh! Well, I suppose that’s logical. The church year ends, perhaps appropriately, in November. And what awaits on that awful day? Judgement of Heaven.

But wait! Don’t book that one-way flight to Australia just yet. Judgement Sunday has another name, too – Christ the King. Instead of being the final kick when you’re down, the last Sunday, which comes before we turn on our Christmas lights and before the snow lights up our street – perhaps when our world is darkest – the last Sunday is one of the brightest of them all. On this day, we celebrate our hope in the day when Christ comes back to judge the world. And – despite the terrible prospect of being judged for what we are – we as Christians pin our hopes on that the sentence will be freeing, and that everything wrong in the world will finally be set right.

Our largest holidays, brought to you by Coca-Cola and Kinder these days, upcoming Christmas and Easter, celebrate with much pomp and circumstance the great events that we believe have happened. But great and significant as these occasions were, they are in the past. We will not see them. But Judgement Day is ahead of us. Even though everything dies, we believe we will rise on that day, and see the return of our Lord. We will all see the return of Christ the King.

With this mindset, and with our hearts looking forward, we can now go into the fast of Advent and a new year of waiting for the Lord.

THE VISITOR/ September-October 2009

A sixty-two year old man, widowed, lonely, bored, sleepwalking trough his life. Walter is his name. He teaches in a college somewhere in Connecticut, USA. Doesn't speak much, doesn't react much. He just exists. Pretends to be busy. He has to leave to New York City to a conference. He doesn't want to but he has no option.

This is how a movie called ”The Visitor” by Tom McCarthy begins. So he arrives in the Big Apple and opens the door of his flat (he owns an apartment in NY). But there is somebody in his flat that he hasn't used for a long time. Someone in the bath tub, a black lady singing. She freaks out and thinks that Walter (fantastic Richard Jenkins) has come to murder her. Walter doesn't understand the situation at all. Her boyfriend enters the flat and attacks Walter thinking that he has done some harm for her. A misunderstanding! Walter really owns the flat but these two have ”rented” the flat from a friend's friend's friend. They leave the place instantly but Walter has a big heart and asks them to stay till they find a new one to live in. The girl Zainab comes from Senegal and the guy Tarek from Syria, illegal immigrants as one soon finds out.

Tarek is into music and introduces African rhythms to Walter who is lost in his life. Walter's wife was a pianist, a classical one and through Tarek's spontaneous and natural way of playing Walter starts to relax and find a beat of his own, a new rhythm to his life. ”Don't think too much. Let it go. ” Walter's musical rhythm was the classical ”1,2,3,4” and Tarek shows him the African beat ”1,2,3”. They start to play together, Tarek becomes the teacher and the college professor his student, a learner. Walter dares to loosen his collar and he takes literally off his tie. He even dares to join the Central Park drummer circle.

One day in a subway station Tarek is arrested, and since he is illegally in the country, he is taken away by the immigration officials. Walter starts to visit him in the jail (even though it looks like a warehouse, on purpose so that the surrounding society wouldn't realize what is happening inside). Mouna, Tarek's mother comes to look for her son because he hasn't answered her calls. Walter has bad news for her but he introduces the women of Tarek's life to each other, Zainab and Mouna. Walter is the only one who can visit Tarek in the jail - the two ladies would be arrested as well if they entered the building. He has got substance to his existence. There is a reason for his life.

Tarek is deported. Nobody knows anything, nobody cares, the authorities are not interested. Walter looses his temper for the first time in his life. He is furious. ”You can't do this to people. He didn't do anything wrong.” Mouna and Walter, the two widows, have become friends. ”I am not busy, I pretend to be busy. I've been teaching the same course for 20 years and that's all....” Walter makes a confession. ”It is because of me Tarek was deported. I threw away the letter from the immigration officials. We have been banished before but I never told my son …” says Mouna on her turn. No, you guessed wrong, no love story or happy ends, no syrup – the movie is about real life. Mouna travels to Syria to his son. She doesn't want to but she has no option. One way ticket and no return...

Walter takes the drum Tarek gave him. He heads off to the subway station. Takes off his coat and starts to drum. He drums and drums. The trains go by and the beat is enthralling. He is good. He is brave enough not to think too much. The rhythm of life has won.

The art of golf / August-September 2009

I have been playing golf, believe or not – but only twice so far! I am not into any kind of ball games actually. I have always been very poor in sports. At school when I was about 20 kg bigger I hated all kinds of sports. It was humiliating to be the one that the team leaders chose last to their base ball teams. Once I agitated the whole class of ours to skip the school sports day. The result of that short rebellion was that my grade in sports was 6/10… I rather wrote letters (in those days, around 100 years ago, people still wrote real paper letters!) to my pen friends all over the world or read books. Exercise or work –outs were not for me!

Then the first racquetball courts were opened in my hometown and a miracle happened. My dad and I started to play together. Soon after that I moved to Turku and continued my lunacy here. The story goes on and I met my husband who was very talented in many kinds of sports and played tennis. He challenged me to play racquetball and I found myself praying: Please God, don’t let me be a total looser! … I wasn’t! Then he took me to an ice-hockey game (I had never been to one!) and in our family they still make jokes of my comments: Can one talk in the penalty box? Is it aloud to lift up the puck?- Don’t laugh! I was serious and wanted to look interested!

Since those days I have learned to play tennis, jog and swim in the winter. I got my first own pair of skies when I turned 40 - so it is never too late. And the 20 extra kg have vanished slowly…But my main idea was not to brag about my successes (of course this gives my narcissism extra bonus) but to insure you how good it feels when one has taken good care of the body as well. Then the mind feels better as well.

Sporting is a good metaphor of life itself. The more you try the harder it gets. I was practising my golf and felt the childhood humiliation come back. I am no good, I am fat, people are watching, I can’t do this. I was trying so hard! I was trying to be perfect, no mistakes aloud! Then I saw this young boy come and just do it, so easily. He hit all the balls and they flew far. What a joy to watch him. And I got this insight! Relax. Take it easy. Don’t try too much. Doesn’t this happen in life as well? The more you push things the more difficult you find everything. The lesson is to have the focus on yourself, on what you are doing and not on other people’s acts. You have the right to be a learner. Playing golf (I can’t say I enjoy it so far) is a good learning experience of humbleness, especially to perfectionists. You can always be better!

Why is it so hard to take it easy? Why are we so control freaks? I hope that this summer has given us at least a few opportunities to relax, to give up, to lay back, to take it easy and not to waste too much energy in worrying. In the book “Winnie-the- Pooh” Piglet is asking Winnie the Pooh in the forest: What if the tree will fall on us? And Winnie the Pooh answers: What if not?

What if not? That is a good question!

To do nothing, just to sit for 10, 15 or 20 minutes. Still. Not that easy. Thoughts gallop around in your head, your back becomes soar, your nose is itching and yet so soothing, so relaxing! What is the difference between meditation and praying? Or is there a difference? I 'd say no, but I realise there are people who distinguish these two. I'd call meditation to wordless prayer, a prayer with your body. We westeners tend to forget the body always, we neglect it in many ways. But your body tells you an awful lot. Is it easy to breath? Do you have a tension neck? Is your body aching all the time? How about your stomach? We should pay more attention to our bodies, listen to the body more carefully. It has a lot to say to us if we dare to stop. It is much wiser than our mind!
So this is about stopping, letting go. Eva, the other leader, is a physiotherapist and she gently guides us to right sitting positions where breathing is easier. We do a lot of relaxing exercises and the body starts to remember more and more every day. You sense fatigue and compassion fatigue in your body, feelings are trying to find their way to the surface, to the skin from somewhere deep inside of you – the body has stored too much, too many sad memories, too much work, too many losses, too many activities, too few stops. Meditation is a cleaning process, emptying process. I realised how much emptyness I need around me at the moment. The room where we had our meditations was rectangular and we sat around it and the center was always empty, the idea was not even to walk across. No candles. No flowers. No icons. No words. The direction was clear – towards God and his love and care. We started the meditation with simple words like: God, show your love in my heart. But you didn't meditate these words like mantras. That would have been too ”intellectual” already. Your whole body was praying. That was enough!
The other leader was Per Mases, the director of the retreat center, an older and wise man, smiling calmly all the time. He shared his wisdom and knowledge about the history of Meditation and Mystics. He radiated some inner Peace, was it Love? I am sure it was. And it was genuine, not fake...

Summer is here. Some of us are already on vacation and some are about to start it. This is the time when we can stop and relax, think over. What is it that I really want? We are usually loaded with expectations for the summer as if the time ended after summer or after Midsummer here in Finland (days start to get shorter, don't forget that!) Dare to create an empty space around you. It can be just 5 minutes but these 5 minutes are only for yourself. The story tells that a mother of small kids didn't have any time for herself but she was creative and had her 5 minutes in the toilet!

Zazen, to sit into silence. We will never be perfect in sitting into silence. Eva and Per never said they knew how to meditate. They were practising it. Let us allow ourselves this attitude of learning.

A Pilgrimage to Santiago/March

It wasn’t easy to average 20 kilometres or more a day with her household on her back, and for much of the way she was only conscious of her aching legs and feet. For her second September in a row Mari-Liis was on pilgrimage, doing the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in two separate stages. Since every extra kilo makes the back and knees more painful, she learnt the hard way what few material things are needed to live. It was emotionally exhausting too, because she was traversing unknown territory and going through countries whose languages she did not speak.

After a long first day’s trek she found ‘no room for them at the inn’. And unusually, no room on the floor either. In conversation in the bar later she and a companion were offered bed only, at 80 euros each. This they declined, but later, the gentleman’s price dropped to 20. Off they were driven for some considerable distance in the dark, to find themselves ensconced in a millionaire’s mansion, in the greatest comfort, with swimming pools, the lot. But they had to add to their journey a four-kilometre walk back to the path next morning, as their host was still asleep.

Would it be always like this? Could she continue to walk on blistered feet? Would she make it to the end, and on the little money she had? She needed her faith and her companions, and others were sharing the way. A couple in their mid-seventies were doing the trip for the twelfth time, along different routes each time. Instead of taking photographs, they were filling large sketch books with their water colours. The pattern of that couple, as with other pilgrims, was to set off early, even before it was light, and to stop early, in the afternoon. Mari-Liis and her companions, having fully digested three course meals offered to pilgrims by local restaurants in the evening, set off later. But this meant arriving at sunset, and the occasional difficulty in finding a bed.

At one sunset she and a couple of others were sitting on a rickety bench, in danger of falling into a precipice behind them, when four local women passed. One hesitated, returned and offered the keys to a furnished house, and later brought them milk and cookies.

Hostels, ‘albergue’, run by municipalities, monasteries and private individuals, specifically for ‘credential’ card pilgrims, provide sleeping accommodation, both sexes in the same dormitories in bunk beds or on the floor. For a peaceful night, ear-plugs are essential. In San Vicente the door to the ‘albergue’ was opened by a bearded Dutchman, and they found within, tables loaded with free food, a charity for pilgrims by the Spanish couple who owned the house. The Dutchman himself had cycled the whole way from Holland to Santiago, and was on his way back.

There is an element of the cross in the trials of a pilgrimage, but resurrection comes with reflection on it afterwards. And Mari-Liis could share it with English congregation members on her regular visits to Turku from Tallinn.

Can I manage to finally reach home? Why am I torturing myself? There is an element of the cross in the trials of a pilgrimage, but resurrection comes with reflection on it afterwards. It’s worth for it and much more.

Mari-Liis says that in everyday life she can manage quite well without the conscious companionship of God, but on a pilgrimage of this kind she needs his support.

Keeping Lent/February

As the year slowly turns and we move towards spring, the season of Lent is upon us once more. Traditionally Christians have used this as a time to metaphorically follow Jesus into the wilderness by denying themselves, by giving up something: maybe its chocolate, or drink, or sugar in your tea! Now I don’t want to undermine the value of such abstinence. It has a long and hallowed tradition behind it, and most of us would benefit from learning that we can get through life without some of the things that we have got used to. Indeed it would very likely do our bodies and our souls good to give up a whole range of pleasurable but non-essential activities and addictive substances!

But there is another way of coming at Lent. I remember well a conversation I had many years ago with a priest who came to talk with me. He was worried because his faith seemed to have died on him and he didn’t know what to do except feel guilty about it. He no longer said his prayers, he didn’t read his Bible, and he really didn’t want to go to church any more. What should he do?

I asked him one of my favourite questions; “What do you do for fun?” “I don’t have time for fun” he replied. He had a full-time job, as did his wife, and they had two small children to look after as well. There was no room for fun. There was precious little room for anything beyond the essential. “Well what did you used to do for fun, back in the good old days?” I asked. He thought for a bit and then said “Well I used to enjoy listening to jazz, I’ve got a large collection of cds of which I’m rather proud, but I haven’t got time for that these days.”

“Right” I said, “I suggest you stop saying your prayers, put your Bible away on a shelf somewhere, and have a break from going to church for a while. Instead give yourself twenty minutes every day to listen to some jazz. And I mean listen, don’t just have it on as back ground music, but make yourself a cup of coffee, pour yourself a drink, sit down in a comfortable chair and give yourself totally to enjoying listening to some jazz. And lets meet again in a months time.”

He agreed to give it a try, and we met a month later. He was a changed man! He told me that he was now saying his prayers, reading his Bible, and was even enjoying going to church. His faith had come alive again. And he’d really enjoyed the time listening to all those wonderful old jazz recordings he had and had forgotten about.

Now this is an extreme story: its not usually as simple as that. But I reckon that many of us would get real value from Lent if we committed ourselves to what I call ‘one simple act of wanton pleasure very day.’ It doesn’t matter what it is, provided it doesn’t harm you, others, or the cosmos. It doesn’t have to be the same thing every day, you might value a little variety. But some selfish, self-indulgent, pleasurable activity, every day, which you allow yourself to enjoy. And notice how different you feel come Easter!

Christians often find this good news a ‘bridge too far’ for them. We have been brought up with assumption that if we like something then it can’t be good for us.
But if we are talking about a loving God Who puts us in a world with which God is well pleased, then it strikes me as a tad ungrateful not to enjoy it! Be responsible about it, sure, but I think God means us to enjoy being here. So why not do something different for Lent this year? A simple act of wanton pleasure every day!

And praise God for it.
